James 1 — Twelve Dispersed Tribes
Introduction: James addresses the twelve tribes scattered abroad. He exhorts believers to count trials as joy knowing they produce steadfastness. He emphasizes asking God for wisdom and understanding that faith without works is dead.
Note: Bible passages are from the American King James Version.
A — Count Trials as Joy
“James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith works patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
B — Ask God for Wisdom
“James 1:5-8 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.”
Comments: God gives wisdom liberally to those who ask in faith. Wavering in faith undermines the reception of God's gifts. Faith must be single-minded and trusting.
C — Blessed Are Those Who Endure Temptation
“James 1:12 Blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love him.”
Comments: Those who endure temptation receive the crown of life. Endurance demonstrates genuine faith and love for God, resulting in eternal blessing.
D — Be Doers of the Word, Not Hearers Only
“James 1:22-27 But be you doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like a man beholding his natural face in a glass. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”
Comments: Believers must do the Word, not merely hear it. True religion demonstrates itself through compassion for the needy and separation from worldly corruption.
Reflections in Prayer
Lord, help me to count my trials as joy, knowing they develop my faith and patience. Give me wisdom when I face difficult decisions. Help me to ask in faith without doubting. Strengthen me to endure temptations, knowing that endurance brings the crown of life. Make me not just a hearer of your Word but a doer. Help me to show genuine faith through compassion to the needy and by living separated from worldly corruption. May my actions demonstrate my love for you. Amen.
